Separators release fluids from solid components or separate mixtures of fluids with varying thicknesses. A typical application on ships is the processing of heavy oil intended for use as fuel. Heavy fuel oil is a residue of petroleum refining and still contains solid particles, which are removed by separators and filters. Separators have a wide variety of applications in industry too.
Various modes of operation and application for separators
There is a variety of different types of separators, operating on different principles. Disc and chamber separators utilise the effect of centrifugal forces, which press particles or liquids with higher density press against the outer wall, allowing them to then be separated. Screw-press separators, in which solids are separated from fluids by means of a rotating auger, are also common. These are particularly suitable when there is a very high proportion of the solid material.
